The school colors for California State University, Dominguez Hills are cardinal and gold, but on March 9, the baseball team will be thinking pink.

The team will recognize breast cancer awareness during the game against California State University, San Bernardino. The game starts at 2 p.m.

Mel Miranda, the assistant athletics director at CSUDH, hopes to make this an annual event for every one of the school’s team.

To raise awareness, “each of our teams that have home events picks a game day where they wear pink shirts and/or accessories,” said Miranda. “We promote the cause on social media, on game programs and through word of mouth. This is important to our department.”

Some sports, such as volleyball and basketball have specific programs to go along with raising awareness. Miranda said volleyball’s is titled “Dig 4 A Cure,” and basketball’s is “Coaches vs. Cancer.”

Miranda hopes in the near future to expand the athletic department’s program to “enlist the help of the campus…to better promote the cause,” he said.
