The Black Greek Council, an umbrella organization for the college’s African American sororities and fraternities, will take place on campus next month.

Throughout the beginning of October, the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity will host information booths along with meet and greets on campus.

These booths will give CSUDH students an opportunity to learn history about the different sororities and fraternities, as well as how to get involved in them.

Xina Adkins, president of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, was excited to share some of the upcoming events and what to expect at the council.

Adkins says the Black Greek Council is basically a collection of all active “Divine Nine organizations,” which consist of the participating historically black Greek organizations on campus.

Though separate, the African American fraternities and sororities are all under the domain of the council, which serves as a governing organization.

The council is a meeting among the Sigma Gamma Rho, Zeta Phi Beta and Alpha Kappa Alpha sororities and the Phi Beta Sigma and Omega Psi Phi fraternities.

They come together to collaborate on new ideas, activities and engagements within the Greek community.

“It gives us an opportunity to collaborate and support each other,” Adkins said.

Adkins encourages students to take part in the Greek system.

“Being in a sorority on campus means that I am a part of something bigger than just myself,” Adkins said. “My organization has been around for almost 100 years and carries so much tradition and history in it that has affected [many people], not just locally, but throughout the nation.

“Not only do I have the opportunity to meet new people, experience new things and give back to my community,” Adkins said, “but it also gave me the chance to explore different aspects about myself.”

Adkins is excited for this school year and has high hopes for what’s to come.

“This is the first time I have taken on such a big role as chapter president, and I can say joining helped me to get out of my comfort zone,” she said.
