Converting downtime into useful time

Dr. Ethan Tussey, an assistant professor of film and media at Georgia State University, has a new book out called “The Procrastination Economy: The Big Business of Downtime,  and gave a talk about his book at California State University, Dominguez Hills on Friday, March 9.

The communications department invited Dr. Tussey to give a talk called “Hunched and Harried: The Value of Mobile Device Distraction.” Essentially, the talk provided short synopsis into research on the way people consume media in a form of “media snacking.”

There were three different aspects that Dr. Tussey looks into in his book, where people tend to use different media the most. Those three places are the waiting room, the commute, and the living room.

The presentation was a refreshing way of presenting what communications majors have been hearing from their instructors. Phones are an overwhelming part of people’s lives, and so many of us spend nearly every spare second staring into tiny screens.

Dr. Tussey did a great job in keeping the room engaged and made the hour-long talk feel short and sweet. If his book is anything like the talk, the book should be an interesting read.
