Mexican Independence weekend was surely that much sweeter for the Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team after winning crucial road games, including a victory over 11th ranked and CCAA conference rival Cal Poly Pomona.
With the win, the Toros improve to 5-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in CCAA competition.
Junior midfielder Adam Vargas was named athlete of the week after netting two goals over the holiday weekend, including the game winner against the Mustangs on Friday Sept. 15. His other goal would come two days later when the Toros defeated Cal State San Bernardino with a score of 3-1 after trailing in the first half.
“These wins are good for us because it builds the confidence to come back home and win those games here,” said Leonardo Nogueira. “That was a big win. We haven’t beat them (Cal Poly Pomona) in the last three years and after we got the goal we knew we had them.”
Nogueira, who hails from Brazil, said the team looks to continue improving by focusing on team chemistry.
The Toros return to action when they host current CCAA champion U.C. San Diego at Toro Stadium Friday at 4:30 p.m.
