Table Tennis Club welcomes spectators to play

Earth science students want Cal State Dominguez Hills students to join them for a game of table tennis.

The CSUDH Table Tennis Club was founded last year, almost by accident.

Paul Randhawa organized an effort to purchase a ping-pong table so earth science students could take study breaks and relieve stress and the club evolved from there.

Randhawa is now inviting students from other majors to participate. Anybody who has interest in the game is encouraged.

“Any skill level is welcome,” he said. “Even if you don’t know how to play, come and learn.”

The club sets its table up below the main campus walkway on the first floor between the Library and Loker Student Union.

Students often stand at the top level walkway, watching intense games of ping-pong without ever joining in. Randhawa wants these spectators to know they are welcome to join in.

Before they purchased their table, the Earth Science Department students regularly played other sports.

Basketball, tennis and soccer were favorites, but when Randhawa brought a clip-on table tennis net to play on the science department’s work tables, the students were hooked.

The game quickly became an obsession among the group of friends, and the club was officially formed during Fall 2016 semester.

During its first semester, the club promoted open-enrollment tournaments for bragging rights that attracted dozens of competitors.

This semester, the Table Tennis and the Peace clubs are coordinating a massive tournament for members in every CSUDH club.

The winner of this year-end tournament will win a table tennis table. The date of this tournament is to be announced later this semester.
