Amid the sexual assault allegations against many powerful men, including Harvey Weinstein, U.S. Sen. Al Franken and President Trump, Dominguez Hills has hired Mayra Romo, the university victim advocate.
As victim advocate and prevention educator, Romo will “be providing confidential support and advocacy for students, faculty and staff impacted by sexual abuse, family and relationship abuse, stalking and sexual harassment,” according to a campus-wide email sent to students and faculty welcoming Romo.
Romo’s victim advocacy and prevention education career started in 2007 at the Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center. In 2008, she became the training coordinator and recruited, trained and certified over 100 volunteer advocates. In 2010, Romo became assistant coordinator for the Violence Prevention and Women’s Resource Center at Cal Poly Pomona. Romo went on to become the violence prevention educator at the Campus Assault Resource and Education office at UC Irvine.
If victims are wary to reach out to Romo for help, there is reassurance. In 2012, Romo was presented the Violence Prevention Champion Award at the California State University Alcohol and Other Drugs Educational Conference. In 2013, for her work at Cal Poly Pomona, Romo was highlighted in the Inland Empire Magazine for its Women for Change Edition. Under her leadership, Cal Poly Pomona’s VPWRC was recognized as a “model program for campus advocacy and violence prevention.”
Romo can be reached at (310) 243-5778 or mromo@csudh.edu for appointments.
