The Office of Sustainability is inviting Toros to dive into a month of hands-on events that link environmental awareness with community action.
Sustainability Month runs from Oct. 7- 30 and offers workshops, service projects, and panel discussions that explore the connections between climate change, racial equity, and civic responsibility. The month’s events aim to build sustainable habits and strengthen CSUDH’s role in environmental advocacy across the city of Carson and the South Bay.
“I have seen how bad it can get, even just the streets nearby get with just the sports events that happen next door at the stadium,” said Hailey Marino, a sophomore biochemistry student. “I’m surprised we don’t think about this kind of stuff too often.”
Organizers told The Bulletin that as CSUDH navigates its budget shortfall, the Sustainability Office will continue to partner with outside vendors to fund its initiatives.
“My director and I, along with our team, have been successful in securing external grants from various sources, which helped us stay afloat,” said Aemelia Hellgren, program coordinator. “For example, Raising Cane’s supported us in funding last April’s Earth Day event.”
Kathryn Santos, an international business student who interns at the Sustainability Office, hopes the number of events this month will encourage Toros to get involved on campus.
“Members meet regularly to brainstorm, organize, and execute sustainability campaigns,” Santos said. “We update regularly and have other outlets to get involved, such as the local ToroThrift on campus, and especially the Toro Green Initiative Fund happening right now.”
