Baseball Preview: Baseball Looks to Improve This Season

The CSUDH baseball team looks to make some major improvements for the upcoming 2020 spring season after finishing their 2019 campaign with a 16-30 overall record and 11th in the CCAA. The team has not made the playoffs or achieved a .500 winning percentage since 2015.

Toros head coach Tyler Wright returns for his fifth season. Since his inaugural season in 2016, Wright has coached 12 All-California College Athletic Association selections and four All-West Region winners, along with three players being drafted to their respective MLB teams.

In 2016, the Toros made a run for the first round of playoffs heading into the final weekend of the regular season and have not shown the same result since.

The Toros will look to rebuild and improve their performance on the field as they return senior first baseman Pierson Loska, who was the only player to start and play in all 46 games and led the conference in home runs (15), slugging percentage (.630), and RBI (59). He was an All-CCAA First-Team selection, CCAA Newcomer of the Year, D2SIDA All-Region second team member and voted CSUDH 2019 Male Athlete of the Year.

Also returning this upcoming season is junior outfielder Jeremy Ciolek, who was an All-CCAA Second Team selection and led the team in batting average (.365), and on-base percentage (.449).

The Toros open their season and conference play on Feb. 14th against Cal State San Marcos for a four-game series, with their home opener double header set for Feb. 16th at 11 a.m and 2 p.m.
