Golf and Track pick up pace in March

Golf Update
Though off to a slow start, the season is in full swing as men’s golf looks to turn things around as it competes in four tournaments in March.

Coming off a month with no tournament play, the golf team returned to the course at Cal State East Bay’s Tim Tierney Invitational on March 5 and 6.

The last tournament the team participated in was Feb. 5, at the Fujikura Invitational at California State University, San Marcos where they finished 15th of 16.

Though the team finished with a lackluster performance, good individual efforts were seen.

Raynard Belmonte led the effort by a scoring an 83 in the first round and team-best 74 in the second. He finished the tournament with a total of 231, Sophomore William Yang finished right behind Belmonte. Yang shot a 233 overall and finished the second and third round with a 76. Five CSUDH golfers finished the final round of the tournament by scoring under 80.

The Toros will participate in tournaments March 5-6, March 12-13 and March 19-20, followed by the Socal Intercollegiate, hosted by UC San Diego, March 26-27, and the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational April 2-3. The CCAA Championships will be held April 23-25 at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico.


Track Update
Coming off the completion of the team’s indoor section of the season, the Toros track and field team continues its stride to the outside portion.

After completing indoor competition at the NAU Tune Up meet at Flagstaff, Arizona on Feb.16, Mariah Walker and Tyrana Beasley showcased their talents in the 60 and 200-meter. Walker finished eighth in the prelims to qualify for the finals, narrowly missing the qualifying mark by .01 seconds. Beasley took 10th in the same event.

In the 200-meter, Beasley took eighth with a time of 25.39 and Walker finished in 14th. Daeniesha Burrell participated in the event and finished with a time of 26.65 and ran under one-minute (59.96) in the 400-meter.

The team opened its outdoor portion of the season at the Rossi Relays, hosted by Claremont Mudd-Scripps on Feb. 24. The team of Walker, Zefora Kemp, Beasley, and Burrell took second place with a strong performance in the 4×100-meter with a time of 47.93.

Walker and Beasley placed third and seventh in the 100-meter, respectively. Junior Loreal Taylor placed seventh in the high jump posting a 4’11.75” result.

On Saturday at the Cal State LA Invitational, the “A” team for the 4×100-meter, consisting of Walker, Kemp, Beasley, and Burrell, finished second with a time of 48.28. Burrell and Kemp took sixth and seventh in the 400-meter, respectively.

Liz Sulaiman placed fourth in the high jump with a 16’6” result. Patricia Leggett and Chloe Ramos competed in the same event and finished eighth and 12th.

The season continues at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, March 10, hosted by UC San Diego.
