Fall registration is quickly approaching. Trying to be more involved on campus?

Cal State Dominguez Hills offers more than just academic classes for students.

Intramural sports and recreational activities are a great way to exercise, have fun and get your mind and body out the classroom.

There are over 20 activities to sign up for and almost 500 students involved each semester.

Students can register for aqua aerobics, basketball, fitness boot camp, flag football, fly fishing, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball and walking. Each course is 1 unit.

Flag football offers a co-ed league. Each year, the teams travel to UCLA to compete in the National Intramural and Recreation Sports Assn. Conference.

“Our philosophy is fun, fitness and friends,” said Director of Intramurals George Wing.

Wing teaches the fly-fishing course, which takes a trip to the Owens River in Bishop to put their learning to the test at the end of the semester.

Fully funded by the Associated Students Inc. (ASI), students will have access to fishing poles, lures, weights, lines and waders. The class will also practice techniques alongside the campus swimming pool.

A new favorite is Fitness Boot Camp. This is the second year CSUDH has offered the course, which is led by members of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program.

“I chose Fitness Boot Camp because I wanted to prepare myself physically and mentally for my last year of college baseball,” said Anthony Cortez, sociology major.

The cap has recently risen to 40 students and new sections will open as this course continues to grow.

Alongside ROTC members, students from KIN 449 also assist teaching these courses.

A $10 activity fee covers food, equipment, shirts and hats.
