The Athletics Department recently unveiled the new “Cardinal and Gold Wall” to recognize student athletes who have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and above from last semester.

The entrance wall of the department in SAC 3 displays pictures of over 40 student athletes who made the cut.

The “Cardinal” section honors those who maintained a 3.0 to 3.49 GPA and the “Gold” section is occupied by students who carried a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

“It’s not only about the success on the field, but in the classroom as well,” said Lauren Redman, an athletic advisor.

Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Rodrick Hay led the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Although not directly a part of the Athletics Department, Hay is an active member within the community and a firm believer in the importance of the full college experience.

“Co-curricular activities, including sports, help with retention and graduation of students,” Hay said.

The idea of awarding student athletes came from last year’s athletics banquet, when Hay mentioned to Jeff Faulkner, athletics director, how impressed he was by eight student athletes who received straight As.

Faulkner then came up with the idea to create this wall for the athletes.

Three students received a 4.0 GPA last semester; Anju Takei, women’s soccer, Bryan Haley, men’s soccer and Jon Soteropulos, men’s baseball, all have their picture on the top row of the wall.

“The Cardinal and Gold Wall” is a great way to honor the student athletes that are excelling academically,” Hay said. “I hope it’s an inspiration for those not yet on the wall to get there.”

The wall will be updated every semester with hopes to outgrow the current location.
