Voters elected Donald John Trump to be the 45th president Tuesday evening, beating out Democratic nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton.
This represents a particular moment in history, being that Trump is the first person in the modern era to be elected president with no prior political experience.
Trump became the GOP nominee after Ted Cruz dropped out of the race after not securing enough delegates to secure his nomination.
This brought him head to head with Hillary Clinton, sparking one of the most controversial campaigns in history.
Clinton, who beat out Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination, put up a strong fight but ultimately lost the White House to Trump.
Throughout the election Trump has stated the reason for his presidential run being his business, which he is more known for than anything else.
The newly appointed president has a background in real estate, sports, and entertainment, being Emmy-nominated for his reality television show: The Apprentice.
His positions on issues ranging from healthcare, education and beyond lean traditionally conservative, in line with his Republican affiliation.
Trump’s run to the presidency did not come without any controversy, his position on policies like immigration have brought a lot of scrutiny to his campaign. His proposed construction of a wall on the Mexico and U.S. border caused a substantial amount of backlash that was only amplified when he later labeled Mexican immigrants as criminals, drug dealers, and rapists.
Those who called his immigration views xenophobic were not pleased when Trump also proposed a temporary ban on any Muslims entering the country. He later changed his stance, stating that the only Muslims that should be banned are the ones who come from countries that have history against the United States and it’s allies.
Despite numerous obstacles throughout his campaign, many of which caused an uproar  from the American public, Trump held a strong number of supporters.
He stormed through the Republican primaries setting the record for the most GOP primary votes ever. Trump recorded more than 16 million votes, where Ted Cruz, John Kasich and Marco Rubio who were the top three challengers only received 15 million votes combined.
Trump is the first Republican in eight years to hold office, which not only creates an important moment for himself but all members of the GOP.
