Winter Break Activities For Those Stuck Inside

Ice-skating, cabins, and giving back to the community are just a few possibilities for this upcoming winter break

The winter break season is upon us and students who were burnt out from the fall semester should remember to make some time for themselves to relax. For students having trouble figuring out what to do over the break, here are some ideas for those yearning for their own winter adventure.

Ice skating is a popular winter past-time. Many ice skating rinks have discounts on entry during the season to entice holiday skaters. The Skating Edge Ice Arena in Harbor City, The Rinks with multiple locations including Lakewood and Anaheim, and the East West Ice Palace in Artesia are all great locations that often have discounted prices.

Hiking and spending the day outdoors is also a great way to enjoy the winter season. Despite being windy, the beaches during the winter are quite beautiful. Some beginner trails worth exploring are the Portuguese Bend Reserve in Rancho Palos Verdes and the trail at Getty View Park.

“I plan on taking a road trip with my family to San Francisco over the winter break,” said sophomore physical therapy major Alexa Ventura. “I just want to spend time with my family and Christmas is coming up and I love gifting presents.”

Embrace the chilly weather with a real alpine adventure by driving up to Big Bear Lake, where there are plenty of snowy activities like snowboarding and skiing. The mountainous regions of Southern California can get a fair bit of snow, so take the opportunity to build a snowman or even capture the beauty of the season through photography.

Spend the night in the mountains and rent out a small, cozy cabin with friends. Heat the fireplace and curl up on the couch with a good book and a hot cup of cocoa. Test your baking chops and make some sweet treats to share and enjoy with friends and family.

Going back outside, you may find local winter festivals. Small farmers markets usually pop up on weekends and cities may hold winter festivals throughout the season. Check out a city’s website to find more information on what is happening nearby.

There are many entertaining activities and hobbies to enjoy, but one of the most caring things one can do during the winter season is take part in giving back to the community by volunteering. Holiday toy drives help provide gifts to children in need. Donating supplies to food drives can also help families that are struggling with meals during this holiday season.
