The CSUDH women’s soccer team claimed their first win of the year Sunday, Sept. 23 over Humboldt State ahead of their visit tomorrow (Sept. 26) to arch-rival Cal State LA.

“I am glad that for the first time everything was coming together,” said CSUDH women’s soccer goalkeeper Ruth-Maria Soto.  “We were successful in our game plan and everyone was working their shift.”

The Toros confounded the Lumberjacks through Sunday’s game with a tactical game plan. In minute 20 of play, Jenn Garfias found the net from inside the box to open the mark for the Toros. Seven minutes later, Holly Kaemerle dibbled 30 yards past Humboldt State defenders to increase the lead. With a 2-0 lead, the team’s defenders led the rest of the way, denying the Lumberjacks scoring opportunities.

“[The win over Humboldt State] by any means necessary, we did what we had to do,” said CSUDH head coach Marine Cano. “If you look at who was the best team, they were. But not in the game plan. They had to crack the safe and they didn’t.”

Cano said that he must be tactical because his team’s game speed is not the best.

“What I think is happening now, the statement we gave today is the [Dominguez] Hills are for real so Cal State LA will be ready for us,” said Cano.

Both CSULA and CSUDH head into tomorrow’s match with a conference record of 1-2-1. The game begins at 3 p.m. and can be viewed online.
